Naked Wedding Cakes!

Posted by   Categories // Inspiration

Ever since I saw the darling cake below, I have become slightly obsessed with this non traditional, unfrosted (apparently that’s not a real word, but oh well) look. These cakes are so unique and I love that homespun feel, not to mention the amount of calories you cut back on by only frosting between the layers! The addition of the fruit and powdered sugar are sure to sweeten it up as well. This style of cake if also very DIY friendly–it certainly doesn’t have to look perfect, which takes a lot of pressure off :)

I did some research and was able to find a few other similar cakes, but not as many as I’d hoped (if you’ve seen any other “naked” cakes like this please let me know!)

Hilary Duff opted for an unfrosted cake at her August 2010 wedding, which I’m sure has inspired many others to give this trend a whirl. It is very chic and simple, but in my opinion it feels much more “unfinished” than the one above which I think pulls together very well.

Strawberry shortcake lover? Have you thought about have a three-tier strawberry shortcake instead of the traditional wedding cake? I love this idea, and it looks so delicious! Check out the recipe on Martha Stewart Weddings. The cake on the right is just SO sweet, don’t you think? So charming and perfectly simple.

I love the addition of the fruit on these cakes. What if the strawberries were dipped in chocolate? Mmmm…

This traditional Scandinavian wedding cake, or Kransekake (which means “ring cake”), is so adorable! I did a google search on these lovely cakes and I have to say I have fallen in love. I have Norwegian heritage so I think I just might have to make one! The cake on the right is a white chocolate cake with lemon cream. Yummy!

These cakes are certainly not for everyone (i.e. frosting lovers), but for anyone who isn’t a huge fan of butter cream or fondant, or wants to cut back on sugar, or wants to save money on their cake, or just wants to try something different… I say go for it!

What do you think of these “naked” cakes? Too unfinished looking? Or the perfect balance of homespun and chic? I’d love to hear what you think. Have a wonderful day!
